Effort and Surrender

One interesting process in working with yoga therapy clients is the recurring issue of helping them stay disciplined and on course, and yet not perpetuate the tendency of "getting it done and checking it off the list" - the yet-another-thing-to-do syndrome.

I've always thought the ideal recipe for an effective yoga practice was the complementary and interdependent application of effort and surrender. This applies to both the act of getting to the practice as well as the action in the practice. If it's all effort and focus, practice can become a chore, controlling; if it's all about relaxing and surrender, practice can become vague, indulgent. Used in equal measure, self-discovery and delight in the moment become ever more accessible.

Imagine that practice is like canoeing on a river or floating on your back in the ocean. The secret to having a relaxed and pleasant outing is the optimal proportion of paddling to floating. If while in the ocean or on the river, you spend most of your time controlling your movements in the water, you end up fighting the water and exhausted. There's really never a sense of floating or being carried – that "ahhh" feeling. If on the other hand, you use just the right amount of steering and paddling to keep yourself on course, but still allow the water to mostly carry you, then you and the water are as one.

Working with your mind in practice is just like this. Keep your mind gently focused, steering it gently and repeatedly back to the focus of its attention while still surrendering, floating, and letting go into the expansiveness – the perfect proportions of effort and flow, focus and connection.

Kathy Ornish

INSPIRATION

Hokusai Says by Roger Keyes

Hokusai says look carefully.

He says pay attention, notice.

He says keep looking, stay curious.

He says there is no end to seeing.

He says look forward to getting old.

He says keep changing.

You just get more who you really are.

He says get stuck, accept it, repeat yourself as long as it is interesting.

He says keep doing what you love.

He says keep praying.

He says every one of us is a child, every one of us is ancient, every one of us has a body.

He says every one of us is frightened.

He says every one of us has to find a way to live with fear.

He says everything is alive -Shells, buildings, people, fish,

Mountains, trees, wood is alive.

Water is alive.

Everything has its own life.

Everything lives inside us.

He says live with the world inside you.

He says it doesn't matter if you draw, or write books.

It doesn't matter if you saw wood, or catch fish.

It doesn't matter if you sit at home

and stare at the ants on your veranda

or the shadows of the trees

    and grasses in your garden.

It matter that you care.

It matters that you feel.

It matters that you notice.

It matters that life lives through you.

Contentment is life living through you.

Joy is life living through you.

Satisfaction and strength is life living through you.

He says don't be afraid.

Don't be afraid.

Love, feel, let life take you by the hand.

Let life live through you.
