Good Space Yoga
with Kathy Ornish

 Spring/Summer 2011

Currently, I am teaching a Beginning Meditation class, which I teach about once a year. Meditation is really the foundation of a yoga practice - the postures and breathing prepare us for the practice of seated meditation. With regular meditation, we reduce stress, cultivate a clear and calm mind, and begin to have the ability to see ourselves and the world around us more clearly. Meditation is a very simple practice, yet a challenging practice to commit ourselves to; however, it's well worth the effort!  Here's a simple practice that might get you started:

-Find a comfortable seated position
either on the floor or in a chair and make sure the spine is long, .
-Make sure you are comfortable and let the body become still.
-Relax your body and face.
-Begin to notice the flow of the natural breath moving in and out.
-Try not to control the breath, but make sure it doesn't become too shallow.
-Notice the touch of breath in the nostrils (the warm of the exhale and the cool of the inhale).
-Have a sense that your mind's attention and the breath are a single stream flowing together.
-When you get distracted by body, outside sounds, sleep, or the mind's thoughts, bring your attention back to the breath.
-Try to both concentrate and let go into the present moment of each breath.

Yours, in service,

KO

Home Practices

I've had so many requests for hip practices lately. Here's an all around nice, and relatively gentle practice, to stretch and strengthen both the hips and the low back. Let the gardening begin!

Inspiration

By Lalla, translated by Coleman Barks

Playfully you hid from me.
                All day I looked.

Then I discovered
              I was you,

and the celebration
         of That began.
