Another Take on Gratitude

The New Year is an obvious marker for doing something new – we often make resolutions to this end. During the Thanksgiving week, I often teach a class session that includes an active practice of giving thanks through  movement and chanting, as well as breathing and meditation all of which include using the words "Gratitude, Contentment, Joy." I've written about this before, yet there are so many ways to practice gratitude, I would like to share a different approach to inspire a sense of heartfelt gratitude. May this practice of gratitude lead to deeper contentment, and ultimately, a connection to joy that resides in our deepest dimension.

Gratitude deepens our appreciation, opens us up more fully to accept to what is, and helps us feel a deeper sense of satisfaction in all aspects of our lives.

We can practice gratefulness by:
  • Taking the time to remember past feelings of gratefulness.
  • Actively cultivating a sense of gratefulness by:
    • Regularly setting a time to practice, such as in bed upon rising, in bed upon going to sleep, or any other regular time during the day.
    • Take spontaneous moments throughout the day to feel grateful.
    • Re-frame toward gratefulness when the mind is headed in a negative direction. This allows us to focus on what is present that is good, rather than what is lacking.

No idea where to begin? Here are some suggestions of things for which to be grateful:
  • Circumstances. Try it not only with the obviously good ones, but also with the circumstances that are challenging.
  • Yourself - think of things you have done and/or qualities you hold, for instance.
  • Others – think of things they have done and/or qualities they hold, for instance.
  • Memories
  • Small occurrences like random acts of kindness
  • Big occurrences

Personally, I find this to be an extraordinarily fruitful practice. It's easy, takes almost no time, can be done anywhere, and can truly transform the nature of your mind and fill your heart with spaciousness. From my heart to yours,

With Gratitude,
Kathy Ornish

HOME PRACTICE

The Winter Soltice is approaching and soon we will celebrate the slowly increasing days of light.

In the meantime, how about doing a yoga practice that cultivates inner light? It's such a nourishing practice to find that light within.

I've included a longer written practice as well as a link to my video on the Himalayan Institute's website.

INSPIRATION

My Brilliant Image by Hafiz

translation by Daniel Ladinsky

One day the sun admitted,

I am just a shadow.

I wish I could show you

The Infinite Incandescence

That has cast my brilliant image!

I wish I could show you,

When you are lonely or in darkness,

The Astonishing Light

Of your own Being!
